A tall tree of the drier forest zones in Liberia, both in high forest and secondary forest. Tree with well-developed buttresses when mature; crown with a storied structure. Smooth grey bark when young, then shallowly grooved when growing older, becoming scaly . Slash soft-fibrous, brownish outside, pale yellow inside. Leaves simple, alternate, clustered at end of the twigs. Petiole medium, flattened above, sometimes with a pair of glands halfway. Blade obovate, 6 – 17 x 3 – 7 cm, with entire margin, rounded or shortly and abruptly acuminate, long cuneate and decurrent at base. Fruits transversely winged little nuts, 4 – 7 cm wide, glabrous, golden brown. Tree deciduous; new leaves reddish. See also PROTA database.
