Medium-sized tree to 18 m and 25 cm Ø, with a rather heavy, spreading crown; outerbark smooth, slash often pinkish; semideciduous/evergreen forest. Leaves simple, alternate, smooth, to 25 x 10 cm, with 8 – 11 pairs of laterals;blade glabrous; ± scalariform venation; flowers white; oblong/elliptic; petiole short, 5 – 10 mm, channelled; lenticels on twigs raised, rounded. Cauliflorous, often also on older branches; fruits on older branches and on the stem, enveloped by the calyx, fruit hidden in the calyx, 4-ribbed towards the top.

Notes

A common tree in the rainforest, to 25 m tall, with a long and slender bole without buttresses; it is easily recognized by the black bark which has narrow but deep longitudinal fissures and ridges; it is very hard, like rock, and when slashed only a few chips splinter off; inner slash reddish brown. Leaves glaucous, grayish or pinkish beneath; ripe fruits yellow. See also PROTA database. A Diospyros species with similar but sub-opposite leaves is the often unbranched shrub Diospyros chevalieri.
