A typical Anthocleista species with long, custered leaves but the branches without thorns; leaves ± sessile, rounded at the top. Small to medium-sized tree up to 20 m tall; bole up to 50 cm in diameter; twigs without spines. Leaves opposite, simple, sessile; blade oblong-obovate to oblanceolate, 40–45 cm × c. 20 cm, in young plants up to 145 cm × 45 cm, base cuneate, auricled, apex rounded, margin entire or minutely crenate. Outside the forest, in swamps, roadsides, and open places in secondary forest.

Tree of gallery forests with the characteristic Anthocleista habit.To 15 m tall and 40 cm ©; branches often armed with 2 erect spines above the leaf axils. Leaves opposite and entire; petiole 1 – 9 cm long. Blade oblong-elliptical to obovate-elliptical, 9 – 35 cm × 5 – 17 cm, much longer in young trees. Margin entire, apex rounded, base cordate/obtuse/cuneate. Fruit an ellipsoid berry with any seeds, 3.5 – 5 cm long, dark green. See also PROTA database.
