Notes

Can grow into a tall tree of 35 m and up to 1 m Ø. Throughout the rainforest, often in slightly swampy places; base with heavy root swellings or low, sharp buttresses to 1 m high, on steep slopes occasionally forming high butt flares. Bole very often slightly angular and sinuous. Slash pinkish red/brown, turning red-brown on exposure, brittle, moist, with a strong sweet, cedar-like smell somewhat like plum (Mango). Leaves simple, alternate, often keel-shaped and ± falcate or asymmetric. Fruit red when ripe, 4 – 5.5. cm long, spindle-shaped. B. bitehi mentioned by Aubréville may be the same as B. mannii. Two smaller relatives of B. mannii occur in Liberia: B. caudata and B. chevalieri; they seem to have a similar scented slash and also the leaves are somewhat similar, albeit more caudate. More material and field descriptions are needed for identification in the field. See also PROTA database. Syn.: Beilschmiedia bitehi

Notes

Shrub or small tree to 15 m, supposedly with a similar scented slash as B. mannii. The drawing in “The guide” suggests that the venation is scalariform, but this is not clear from the scans here.
