Notes

Small tree of the sea shore, riparian forest, or forest understory, with whorled branches. Slash with a green layer under the outer bark. Leaves simple, alternate, with few laterals and glands on the lamina. Tree with large pale-reddish flowers solitary in the leaf axils. Bark a much-used remedy against cough. Syn.: Napoleonaea leonensis.

Notes

May become an emergent tree of 45 m tall and 150 cm Ø. Crown rather dense and narrow, with ascending branches. Bole long and straight, fluted. Bark thick and dark-brown, with deep, anastomosing fissures and longitudinal flakes. Slash pale-pink, with a woolly-fibrous texture. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate, with distinct pit domatia. Flowers white, forming a white carpet under the tree. Fruits almost orbicular with four membranous wings that look very similar to the fruits of Combretum lianas. See also PROTA database. Syn.: Combretodendron africanum /Combretodendron macrocarpum.
