Notes

Small tree to 10 m high and 15cm Ø (rarely more), widespread in farm regrowth, but also common in thickets along lagoons, along rivers and in gallery forests. Bark brown, finely scaly. Wood hard, reddish. Stalked glands of up to 4 mm on twigs, especially at the nodes. Leaves rather variable, usually elliptic – obovate, 5 – 9 x 3 – 6 cm, rounded /cordate at base, but shade leaves more cuneate and up to 20 cm long; margin dentate with glandular, thickened teeth; 5 – 9 pairs of laterals. Fruit enveloped by persistent calyx. Closely related is S. laevigata, found from Sierra Leone – Senegal, with crater-like glands of 1 – 2 mm across; persistent calyx much shorter than the fruit. Where the distribution areas overlap crossbreeds may occur. See also PROTA database.
