Shrub or small tree often on rocky sites, with downwards pointing, 1 – 1.5 cm long, lenticellate spines; twigs white with circular lenticels. Leaves obovate, elliptic or round, rounded or cordate at base, with long, spreading hairs on midrib and laterals below; leaf margin crenate/serrate, with thickened ends of veins in the teeth; few laterals; fine venation laxly scalariform or laxly reticulate; stipules more or less persistent, bent sideways.
