Notes

A fairly rare, large tree of the semi-deciduous forest, to 35 m tall and 130 cm Ø. Base cylindrical, lacking buttresses but having root spurs; bark with long cracks when young, scaly in older trees, hard and thick slash, reddish brown with white streaks, gritty; crown spreading with tufts of leaves at the end of the twigs. Rachis finely puberulous. Leaflets in 6 – 11 pairs, with 16 – 30 fine, parallel nerves, often very hairy, slightly asymmetric. Fine venation obscure. Margin entire, with a thickened edge (marginal nerve). Fruits rounded, about 5 cm Ø, the characteristic pitted stones often found under the tree. See also PROTA database.
