Small or medium-sized tree, to 30 m tall and 40 cm Ø, but usually smaller; fairly common understory tree in all forest types. Straight stem and small crown with very long, clustered leaves, to 70 cm, with 6 – 8 pairs of sub-opposite leaflets; midrib of the leaflets prominent above. Tree conspicuous at time of flowering with large, pyramidal inflorescences of up to 80 cm long with small reddish flowers. Slash thin, reddish, contoured, soft fibrous, showing small white spots of whitish latex turning black. Fruits 2.5 cm long, reddish, glabrous drupes, containing a purplish seed.
