Shrub or small or tree in coastal thickets, or medium-sized tree in the rain forest, fluted when large, with the branches clustered at the top; slash soft, thick, finely contoured, easily peelable, sometimes with black outer layer, pale pinkish-yellow, turning brown, wet and gritty. Leaves 6 – 15 x 2 – 5.5 cm, obovate, densely hairy beneath, with 8 – 15 pairs of conspicuous laterals, impressed above, looping at some distance from the slightly undulate margin. Fruit carpels to 9 cm long and 2 cm thick, acute at the apex, longitudinally ridges, pilose, with prominent reticulations.
