Small to medium sized tree to 20 m and 50 cm Ø; bole straight and tapering, with a distinct axis to the top. Crown with horizontal branches which are turned up slightly at the extremities. Sometimes with low, laterally flattened stilt roots. Bark light grey, smooth or finely rough; slash thin, light brown, darkening on exposure, stringy fibrous and scented. Leaves simple, alternate, elliptic/oblong, up to 15 x 6 cm, gradually acuminate, rounded/obtuse at base, with entire margin, leathery, a bit bluish below; midrib reddish above near base, prominent below, with about 5 pairs of looping laterals. Fruits very spicy, “Guinea pepper”, narrow, 5 – 6 cm long in bunches of more than 25.
