FWTA 1: 42
Harley 1294 (WAG); Voorhoeve 910 (WAG)
Generally a slender tree to 27 m but rarely over 40 cm Ø; the bole is tapered, with a distinct axis supporting a small, narrow, conical crown with thin, horizontal branches. Base slightly fluted or with indistinct shallow buttresses – and occasionally with low stilt roots. Bark dark brown, fissured and scaly, hard, with a soft, yellowish-brown inner layer; slash thin, stringy-fibrous, aromatic, easily peelable, light brown, darkening on exposure. Twigs with conspicuous lenticels and sharp ridges between nodes (see photo of X. letestui). Canopy leaves obovate but shadow leaves more ovate/elliptic and acute. Laterals 6 – 8, looping onto a sub-marginal nerve. Fruit 3 – 5 carpels similar to those of X. staudtii, but the seed nearly covered by the aril. See also PROTA database.
