Notes

Can grow into a dominant canopy tree of 45 m and 120 cm Ø above the very high butt flares. The drawing of a cross-section shows that of a tree at about 1 m: a complex structure of butt flares; the dotted circle gives the cross section of the bole at about 7 m high. Slash with abundant white latex. Leaves in whorls of (3) 4 – 7. Numerous straight laterals joining a sub-marginal nerve. Fruit resembling those of Holarrhena and Pleioceras: a pair of free carpels on a common stalk, long and thin, 20 – 40 cm long, with numerous flat, ± 4 mm long seeds with tufts of long hairs at both ends. Syn.: Alstonia congensis. See also PROTA database.
