Notes

Usually a small tree but c.g.i. a tree of 60 cm Ø; bark very bitter; very big fruits. Slash yellowish, with white latex; white latex. Leaves simple, opposite, entire, shiny above, with numerous vague laterals joining a sub-marginal nerve. Base of channeled petiole with very small pockets. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, with white, fragrant flowers. Fruits big, solitary or in couples, ± egg-shaped, to 20 cm long and 12 cm thick, smooth and yellow when ripe, with a very hard outer layer, containing numerous flattened seeds of about 2 cm long. Wood hard, finely grained, yellow, used for utensils, paddles etc. See also PROTA database.
