Medium sized tree to 30 m tall with a fairly short bole and heavily branched, spreading, dark crown. Short root claws with slight fluting or short buttresses on larger trees. Bark thin, scaly, and often pustular with scattered lenticels. Slash brownish red, rapidly darkening, granular and brittle, after a while accumulating a clear thick gum. Leaves simple, alternate, ± distichous, with a pair of glands at base of blade; veins ± scalariform perpendicular to midrib.
