Notes

Crown of young trees with a distinctive habit of flat whorls of long horizontal branches topped by a long, straight, leafy shoot; bark smooth and grey. Mature trees with a wide crown of heavy, more vertical branches. Can grow into an emergent tree of 45 m with a long, straight, dark bole, a swollen or slightly fluted base; bark vertically fissured, deep brown to nearly black; slash light brown outside, bright yellow near the yellow sapwood, quickly oxidizing to light brown, soft and fibrous. Leaves simple, alternate, more or less clustered, oval – obovate. Fruits longitudinally winged. See also PROTA database.
