Small tree to 35 cm Ø with a fluted, tortuous, low- branched stem; bark smooth with thin scales that roll up; slash thin with a thin green outer layer over a pink inner layer. Leaves of Hymenocardia have characteristic reddish/orange glandular points on the lower surface. Inflorescences on bare twigs, flowering when the new leaves appear during the dry season; male flowers in an inflorescence, female flowers often solitary. Fruits winged. Syn.: Hymenocardia chevalieri.
