Common, small tree of young secondary and disturbed forest, seldom over 15 m and 40 cm Ø; dense, spreading crown; bole bent and heavily branched; base with stilt roots when young, later with low buttresses; young stems and branches armed with spines. Not to be confused with Bridelia grandis. Leaves simple, alternate, with a lax scalariform venation; a pare of glands at leaf base.
