Can grow into a high forest tree of 20 m tall and 80 cm Ø. Can be confused with Allanblackia but Pentadesma is grooved, the bark scales are ± rectangular. Slash soft and brittle, reddish, often with alternating darker and lighter layers, exuding a pale yellow latex from the cambium layer. Leaves simple, opposite, 7 – 18 x 3 – 7 cm, with numerous fine parallel laterals joining a marginal nerve; resin ducts between the laterals Big, pulpy fruits to 15 x 10 cm, with remnants of bundles of stamens. The big seeds are edible. The tree has a very strong taproot.
