Can be a very big tree, to 40 m, with high buttresses up to 5 m; twigs and branches knobbly, contorted. Tree not yet recorded from Liberia but present in both Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. Leaf often cordate, rounded at the tip in mature leaves, glaucous below, 13 – 25 x 4 – 9 cm, 10 – 15 (or more) pairs of laterals; fine venation closely scalariform. Fruit dry when ripe, with stiff fibres. Distinction from I. gabonensis is difficult.
