A fairly big tree of riversides, savannas, swamps or the coastal zone, to 25 m high and 90 cm Ø above the buttresses; stem irregular, often twisted. Bark blackish, scaly; slash thin, fibrous-brittle, red-brown. Leaves smaller than those of C. klainei, pinnate with alternate leaflets; persistent leaf-like intra-petiolar stipules; base of the leaflets twisted. Fruit a fat brown-velutinous pod of about 10 x 5 cm, bulgy with 1 or 2 fat seeds. See also PROTA database.
