A tall tree, to 36 m high and 90 cm Ø, found scattered in both the rain forest and semi-deciduous forest. Base with low, spreading, transversely striate, concave buttresses; stem a bit angular, sometimes crooked. Bark with irregular, longitudinal, thin scales covered with numerous small, black lenticels, the bark scales leaving bright brown, yellow-brown rimmed patches when shed. Slash 3 – 4 mm thin, very brittle, yellowish on the outside, reddish on the inside, slowly exuding a red juice that solidifies black. Very fine ripple marks visible. Leaves pinnate with alternate leaflets. Fruit a flattened disk of about 2 cm Ø, black when dry, containg one seed. See also PROTA database.
