A tree found widespread in Liberia, but growing tallest in the northern regions, to 30 m high and 90 cm Ø. Deep crown with ascending branches. Base with heavy root swellings, low, rarely high buttresses; bark smooth, transversely striate. Slash about 8 mm thick, the outer layer yellow, granular, the inner layer reddish, brittle, slowly exuding a red juice that solidifies black. Very fine ripple marks visible. Leaves impari-pinnate with 7 – 10 pairs of (sub)opposite leaflets + terminal leaflet. Fruit globular – ovoid, 1 – 1.5 cm long, densely bright brown velutinous, containing one seed.
