A very big tree, growing in small groups in the wettest part of SE Liberia and SW Ivory Coast, up to 150 cm Ø. It has a cylindrical stem with a massive base, swollen root ridges or low buttresses. Bark grey-brown, often faintly grooved. Slash on the trunk thick, reddish brown, slightly fibrous; slash on buttresses thin, light brown, watery. Pari-pinnate leaf with numerous small, asymmetrical, opposite leaflets; big stipules. Seedlings easily confused with Plagiosiphon. Pods elliptical, about 5 x 3 cm, with a faint lateral ridge; 1-seeded. See also PROTA database.
