Small or tall tree or shrub in low bush but also a forest tree along creeks and in swamps; the conspicuous white flowers have 5 big petals (the other Berlinia species have only one big petal). The smooth fruit resembles that of B. confusa but has a broad, winged, and grooved ventral ridge. Leaflets coriaceaous, not falcate, often sub-opposite. Slash thick, fibrous, orange-brown, with strong vegetable-like smell. See also PROTA database.
