Possibly one of the biggest trees in Liberia, to 45 m and 180 cm Ø. When young the tree has low, heavy, sometimes wide spreading root swellings or root spurs; older trees have thick, heavy buttresses up to 1.8 m high. Bole straight and cylindrical; slash with reddish or brown sap or resin. Twigs and leaves drooping, giving the crown a characteristic habit. Leaf with 6 – 13 juga; leaflets asymmetric; falcate and unequal-sided, with a few sub-basal laterals on one side; large glandular cell at the base. Big flat pod with a broadly winged back, reddish/brown. See also PROTA database.
