A medium-sized tree, most common in secondary formations but also an emergent tree of the high forest, to 50 m and 120 cm Ø. Larger trees with well-developed buttresses; young trees in secondary forest often crooked. Mature trees are dark brown, scaly, often with a thick layer of dead bark. The slash is characteristically multi-coloured. Leaves clustered, imparipinnate, with ± 19 leaflets with stipels at the base of the petiolules. Fruit a papery thin pod. See also PROTA database.
