Shrub or small tree of coastal lagoons or gallery forests. Leaves simple, opposite, often swollen near the base; midrib canaliculate above; margin entire; 8 – 10 pairs of vague laterals. This species differs from M. accedens in having only the last internode being 4-sided, or not 4-sided at all, whereas M. accedens has distinctly 4-sided twigs.
