Notes

Can grow into a giant of the rainforest, to 50 m tall and 150 cm Ø. Base of the tree with heavy root swellings, extending in wide-spreading surface roots; stem often with a twist higher up the stem. Bark usually very scaly with irregular, thin scales. Between the dead outer bark layer and the living inner bark there is (nearly always) a thin, bright yellow layer. Leaves clustered, glossy dark green, with very numerous fine, parallel nerves, slightly raised on both surfaces; new leaves in red flushes. Fruit a one-seeded nut with two unequal-sized wings at base. Wood very hard. See also PROTA database.
