Common middle story tree of the rainforest, to 30 m and 60 cm Ø, locally abundant; base with sharp root spurs; stem straight and slender, crown small and dense; bark grey-black with numerous small corky lenticels, scaly with an irregular pattern, shed scales leaving a yellowish brown scar, giving the bark a camouflage effect; slash fairly hard, yellowish interspersed with fine stripes. Leaves simple, alternate, with entire margin, decurrent along petiole; acute/acuminate tip, ± rounded base; about 4 – 5 curved laterals. Venation ± scalariform? Fruit about 2cm Ø, fleshy, containing a nut with a coriaceous shell. Seedling with 3 first, nearly round, tri-nerved leaves. See also PROTA database. Note: a small erect treelet, only recorded from Liberia, is Strombosiopsis nana; petiole normal, margin entire, blade ± 3-nerved with 2 glands near de base; petiole winged.
