A small tree to 15 m and 40 cm Ø, with strong thorns of about 5 cm long, in deciduous forest but often planted in villages; fragrant, white flowers and hard-shelled, orange like fruits of 5 – 10 cm across. Leaves mostly trifoliolate, sometimes bifoliolate or unifoliolate; if only simple leaves are seen, compare with Aeglopsis chevalieri, a small tree. The middle leaflet with distinctly longer petiolule. Margin entire.
