A medium-sized tree of the semi-deciduous forests, to 20 m high and 50 cm Ø, with irregular, sometimes twisted stem, low- and densely-branched. Bark rough, scaly/flaky, with greenish and orange-ish patches; slash hard and brittle, contoured with differently coloured layers, soon turning dark. Leaves 2 – 4 jugate, the leaflets alternate – opposite with the midrib prominent on both sides. Buds reddish tomentose. Fruits pear-shaped, 4 – 6 cm long, 4 lobed, yellow when ripe, smelling like rotten apples. See also PROTA database.
