Common and widespread understory tree in many forest types. Slash red-brown. Leaves to 85 cm long, with 4 – 12 pairs of acuminate leaflets, up to 8 x 35 cm; the upper ones the largest and oblanceolate. The rachis is grooved, especially near the base, and has an extension beyond the upper pair of leaflets. Inflorescences close to the ground. Developing fruiots velvety-hairy, but mature fruits soon glabrous with 6 rounded lobes, 3 broader and 3 narrower.
