Notes

Medium-sized tree to 20 m high, strongly branched, with a irregular, often tortuous stem and often a channeled base. Tree of the drier forest types, gallery forest and savannas. Bark finely scaly, reddish brown, the scales leaving reddish spots. Slash thin, brittle, exuding a clear, sticky exudate. Leaves pari-pinnate, in tufts at the end of the twigs, with 4 – 6 pairs of opposite or subopposite leaflets; leaflets crenate/serrate along the upper margin. Fruits ellipsoid, fleshy, glabrous, about 2 x 1.5 cm, yellow/orange when ripe, containing 1 seed in a sweet pulp. See also PROTA database.
