Shrub or small tree to 8 m tall; twigs brown, often with ridges, glabrous or sometimes with hairs at the end. Leaves very variable, with triangular, caducous stipules; petiole 10 – 35 cm long, jointed at both ends; blade very variable, oval, elliptic, obovate, or three-lobed, to 30 cm long and 10 cm wide. Fruits 3.5 – 7 cm long, beaked, red-orange.
