Notes

Small understory tree to 12 m, rarely more, with a short, straight, slender bole to 60 cm Ø, and spreading crown. Bark dark brown fissured, pitted, often decaying on the tree; slash pale pink with orange, soft fibrous streaks, darkening after exposure. Its presence in the forest often indicating an old village site. Fruit carpels green and shiny, knobbly, to 13 cm long, conspicuously beaked; 6 – 8 edible seeds in each carpel (kola nuts).
