Notes

Tall tree of the semi deciduous forests, reaching 80 cm Ø, with high buttresses. Bark scaly, thin; slash fibrous, red with cream lines, darkening, bitter. Leaves grouped at the end of the twigs, with a long petiole of (2) 5 – 10 cm; the blade 10 – 30 x 4 – 16 cm, rounded to slightly cordate at base, with 10 – 15 pairs of laterals, not strongly 3-nerved at base. Tuft domatia in the nerve axils. Fruit composed of a few free carpels 5 – 6 x 2.5 – 3 cm, a bit tomentose outside, each with 7 – 9 bright red seeds when ripe. The carpels open on the tree and the seeds hang out on short stalks of 1.5 cm. Wood with storied structure: ripple marks visible (?). See also PROTA database.
